Panchkula: Another international cricket stadium is set to come up in Panchkula, with the municipal corporation (MC) planning to build the facility at Naggal village. Drawings for the proposed project, which will also include facilities for multiple sports disciplines along with the cricket stadium, are currently being prepared.MC officials said the civic body intends to make a cricket stadium of international standards so that international matches can be hosted in future. In this regard, the MC will write to the Haryana govt, seeking approval and support. Speaking to TOI, Panchkula MC commissioner Vinay Kumar said that adequate land is available at the Naggal site. He added that the project location had recently been slightly modified, resulting in more vacant land being available around the proposed stadium.“The site has ample vacant land, where space can be created for seating after acquiring the land. We are going to write to the state govt in this regard,” Kumar said. He pointed out that while there are international cricket stadiums in neighbouring areas, Panchkula currently does not have one.“There are stadiums in Mohali and Chandigarh, but none in Panchkula. We hope to create one such international stadium on this side of the Tricity. This location has many advantages, including lesser traffic and more space,” the MC commissioner added. At present, the primary international cricket venue in the Tricity region is the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Opened in 2021, the stadium has a seating capacity of about 38,000 and serves as home ground for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, replacing the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali. The IS Bindra stadium is a historic venue that has hosted several major international matches, including World Cup games. Chandigarh’s Sector 16 stadium earlier hosted international matches during the 1980s and 1990s, while the Tau Devi Lal stadium does not meet international standards. In addition to the cricket stadium, the Naggal sports complex will feature infrastructure for sports such as volleyball, basketball, badminton, athletics, table tennis, swimming and other disciplines.MSID:: 130210381 413 |
