The UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into force on 15 July, with 99% of Indian goods entering the UK and 90% of UK goods entering India will either be duty free or reduced in tariffs. It will benefit a wide range of sectors on both sides including automotive, manufacturing, consumer goods, creative industries, and medical technology. The agreement marks the biggest milestone in the bilateral economic partnership. In the long run, the deal is expected to boost bilateral trade by £25.5 billion, Indian GDP by £5.1billion, and UK GDP by £4.8billion every year.
The FTA is set to transform the medtech and digital health landscape by opening new avenues for innovation, investment and cross-border collaboration. From AI-powered diagnostics and surgical robotics to connected digital health platforms, the agreement will make cutting-edge technologies more accessible, while enabling joint research, clinical trials and co-development between companies in the UK and India.
In this conversation, Dr. Edna D’Souza, Cluster Director, Healthcare, Life Sciences and Chemicals at the British High Commission in India explains how the agreement could improve health outcomes for Indian patients, reshape market access, spark collaborative innovation and build a powerful platform for scalable, patient-focused healthcare.
Q1. From a MedTech perspective, what are the most significant opportunities the India–UK Free Trade Agreement will unlock for UK companies entering or expanding in India?
For the medtech sector, the agreement is a genuine turning point. India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on 90 per cent of its product lines for UK goods, while the UK will do the same on 99 per cent of its tariff lines for Indian products. UK companies will benefit from zero tariffs on goods, where India currently applies 11% tariffs. Market access has also been secured for UK medical devices. A staged tariff reduction on medical devices will open market access that simply did not exist before.
Beyond tariffs, the agreement actively encourages joint research and development, clinical collaboration and skills exchange. Bilateral trade between the two countries is expected to grow by £25.5 billion annually in the long term, with both India and the UK projected to increase GDP by nearly £5 billion annually over time, a reflection of just how significant this partnership is.
The most exciting prospect, however, lies beyond the numbers. The businesses that will thrive are those using this technology to make healthcare innovation more accessible, scalable and genuinely patient-centred, delivering world-class technology at price points that can change health outcomes at scale. Q2. The UK has positioned itself as a global leader in MedTech innovation. Could you highlight a few UK-based companies redefining care delivery, and explain what makes their solutions stand out globally?
What sets UK medtech apart is its focus on improving real experiences, making treatment earlier, safer, less invasive and more accessible. Across robotics, diagnostics and imaging, several UK companies are fundamentally reshaping how patients are diagnosed and treated.
In surgical robotics, CMR Surgical is expanding access to robotic surgery through its Versius system. Unlike traditional robotic platforms that are large and expensive, Versius is small, modular and easy for hospitals to adopt, enabling minimally invasive procedures that can lead to smaller incisions, quicker recovery and shorter hospital stays for patients.
In orthopaedics, Smith+Nephew is improving surgical outcomes with its CORI robotic-assisted system. The technology helps surgeons place implants with improved accuracy & reliability, reducing complications, faster recovery and improving long-term mobility for patients. As precision surgery expands into more hospitals, more patients can benefit from advanced care closer to where they live. Additionally, in Sports Medicine, Smith+Nephew is helping surgeons restore mobility and accelerate recovery through its advanced arthroscopy and soft tissue repair technologies that is designed to support precise repairs, enhance procedural efficiency, and help patients return to active lifestyles faster.
Robotics is also becoming smarter and more preventative. Luma Robotics is redefining how clinicians investigate lung nodules, which can be an early sign of cancer. By combining AI-guided robotics with real-time imaging, the technology helps doctors autonomously reach and investigate small nodules quickly and safely, reducing delays, uncertainty and the need for multiple invasive procedures. For patients, this can mean earlier diagnosis, faster treatment decisions and far less anxiety.
Oxford Nanopore Technologies has developed sequencing platforms capable of analyzing DNA and RNA directly and in real time, this has the potential to transform the use of genetic sequencing across range of sectors including in research and clinical settings. Its portable format means that in some settings it can generate insights within hours, for example in identifying infection diseases in critical ICU setting or supporting faster and more personalized decisions making.
Occuity is pushing diagnostics even further towards prevention. Its non-invasive eye scanning technology can help detect conditions such as diabetes, glaucoma and even neurodegenerative diseases. By enabling testing in clinics, pharmacies and community settings, it moves diagnosis beyond hospitals and makes early detection a routine part of everyday healthcare
Virtual Autopsy UK is advancing virtual autopsy techniques that replace invasive procedures with advanced imaging. This approach provides families with a respectful and culturally sensitive death care process, while giving forensic specialists more accurate digital records and forensic insights.
Together, these innovations reflect a shared focus on patient-centred care with earlier diagnosis, less invasive treatment, faster recovery and wider access. This scalable approach is what makes UK medtech innovation globally distinctive.
Q3. How can the FTA help address some of the long-standing barriers in medtech trade, such as regulatory alignment, tariffs, and market access challenges?
The FTA tackles several deep-rooted barriers head on. Both Indian and UK pharmaceutical products and medical devices will benefit from tariff reductions, with India receiving full tariff elimination following the agreement entering into force on 15 July 2026, unlocking access to a market that has historically been high-tariff and difficult to enter.
On intellectual property, both sides have committed to transparent and effective administration and enforcement of IP rights, creating a more stable environment for medtech and biopharma innovators. The UK-India FTA also reaffirms protection for undisclosed regulatory data submitted for pharmaceutical approvals, in line with international obligations under the World Trade Organization (WTO) TRIPS agreement.
Looking further ahead, the UK-India Vision 2035 sets out the shared commitment to deeper collaboration on innovation, research and regulatory alignment in priority sectors such as health and life sciences, ensuring this agreement is the foundation of a long-term partnership, not just a one-time trade milestone.
Q4. The intersection of medtech with data, cloud and interoperability is becoming increasingly critical. Are there UK firms enabling seamless hospital integration or unified patient data ecosystems that could help address fragmentation in markets like India?
Absolutely. The UK has built strong, practical expertise in making health information follow the patient rather than remain confined within a single hospital, and several UK solutions are designed to enable exactly that.
Across the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), widely used digital health records enable patient records to be shared securely between doctors, hospitals and community services. For patients, this means fewer repeated tests, less paperwork and faster decisions at the point of care. Patients can also access their records and choose to share them with clinicians, caregivers or family members, helping ensure continuity of care when they move between providers.
At the hospital operations level, Asika deploys autonomous AI agents to streamline workflows across the entire patient journey, from admission through to billing and insurance claim management, reducing administrative costs and accelerating revenue cycles.
Trust is equally important as capability. ORCHA plays a key role by clinically assessing health apps and digital solutions before they are deployed at scale, helping health systems recommend safe, evidence-based technologies. Leveraging this assessment to India’s digital landscape by developing ORCHA India Data Protection Mark (OIDPM) in collaboration with Alpha MD demonstrates trusted quality mark for data integrity and security supporting innovation and economic growth.
Together, these solutions reduce fragmentation, improve data flow and build trust creating a pathway for healthcare systems to move from siloed care to more integrated, efficient and personalised patient experiences.
Q5. Digital health platforms and virtual care models gained significant momentum after the pandemic. Which UK innovators are leading this space, and how adaptable are their solutions to a complex, high-volume market like India?
One of the strongest signs of the UK’s strength and leadership in digital and virtual care is that several solutions are already operating in India today, while others are preparing to enter the market. This reflects a design philosophy focused on scale, practicality and real-world clinical use rather than experimentation.
A compelling example is the Clinical Reasoning Engine, a declarative AI platform invented in the UK but manufactured into a medical device by RELX India for supporting frontline ASHA workers in identifying high-risk pregnancies in the community. By strengthening last-mile healthcare delivery, the tool can help address high maternal mortality rates.
Isansys enables continuous remote monitoring of critically ill patients outside the ICU – in wards, at homes and in ambulances. Its technology allows clinicians to track patients in real time and respond earlier to signs of deterioration, which is particularly valuable where specialist capacity is limited and patient volumes are high.
Other UK innovators are addressing gaps in diagnostics and clinical decision-making. Microbira uses digital tools to accelerate microorganisms identification, enabling clinicians to prescribe the most effective antibiotics while helping limit the spread of antimicrobial resistance.
Looking ahead, several UK solutions are expected to enter India soon. Panakeia has developed PANProfiler, an AI platform that analyses biopsy images already taken as part of routine patient care to detect biological changes and inform faster, more informed clinical decision making, as well as the discovery of new, more targeted medicines that can reach patients sooner. Cirdan, a leading global provider of Laboratory Information Systems based in Northern Ireland, is also delivering advanced X-ray specimen imaging solutions designed to accelerate diagnoses for conditions such as breast cancer.
What unites all these technologies is their adaptability. They are designed to integrate into real health systems, support clinicians and frontline workers, and deliver better patient outcomes at scale – making them a natural fit suited to India’s diverse, high-volume healthcare environment.
Q6. What specific provisions or enablers within the FTA could help UK start-ups accelerate their ability to pilot, partner and scale in India?
The UK-India FTA creates a genuinely enabling environment for UK start-ups. Voluntary licensing and technology transfer provisions enable Indian firms to access and adapt UK-origin innovations for both domestic and global markets, opening doors to local partnerships that can accelerate growth far faster than export alone.
Greater cooperation between research institutions, universities and industry creates structured pathways for joint research, clinical validation and commercialisation. Workable rules of origin, combined with pragmatic compliance requirements, give UK start-ups the flexibility to source globally while still benefiting from preferential tariffs when exporting to India.
The FTA also strengthens intellectual property cooperation and enforcement, with commitments to transparent and effective administration of IP rights and a stable environment for safeguarding of trade secrets to give innovators the confidence to share their technologies and enter new partnerships without compromising their competitive advantage in medtech and biopharma industries.
Q7. Beyond facilitating exports, how can the FTA drive deeper collaboration such as co-development, joint research and technology transfer between UK innovators and Indian healthcare providers?
The real ambition of this agreement goes well beyond trade. It creates the conditions for genuine co-creation, where UK innovation and Indian scale combine to develop healthcare solutions with global relevance.
The framework encourages closer collaboration between research institutions, universities and industry in both countries, accelerating joint research, product development and clinical validation.
Voluntary licensing and technology transfer provisions enable Indian firms to access and adapt UK-origin innovations for domestic and global markets; the FTA can support faster technology diffusion while creating opportunities for joint manufacturing and long-term commercial partnerships.
At the same time, reduced import duties on high-value technologies such as surgical robots and advanced sequencing platforms can stimulate joint R&D, clinical trials and “Make in India” manufacturing. UK firms gain access to India’s unmatched scale, diverse datasets and large patient populations, while India benefits from cutting-edge innovation expertise. Together, this creates a powerful platform for collaborative healthcare innovation that can deliver solutions at both scale and affordability that genuinely changes lives.
Q8. Looking ahead to the next three to five years, which areas of MedTech collaboration between India and the UK are likely to experience the fastest growth?
Over the next 3 to 5 years, the areas that will grow fastest are those that combine meaningful patient impact with cost-effective delivery at scale, and the conversation we have had today points clearly in that direction.
The first wave of growth will come from digital health platforms and virtual care models. Solutions supporting frontline workers, enabling remote monitoring, and reducing pressure on hospitals are already proving their value in India. UK companies understand that success here depends on integrating with existing care pathways and workforce realities, rather than introducing standalone technologies.
The second wave will be driven by diagnostics and data-enabled decision-making. Faster diagnostics, digital pathology, AI-supported imaging and interoperable data platforms can significantly reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment. For patients, this means earlier intervention and better outcomes; for health systems, it translates into greater efficiency and lower long-term costs.
The third wave will center around robotics and precision-led interventions, particularly where innovation makes advanced care more affordable and easier to deploy. UK companies are increasingly focused on “right-sized” technologies designed for real-world healthcare settings, not just centres of excellence.
What is more encouraging is that the UK medtech companies are not waiting for India as a future market – they are already here. They understand the local healthcare landscape and are actively designing solutions with scale, affordability and access built in from the start. At the same time, there is growing interest from Indian companies to partner with UK innovators, whether through co-development, manufacturing, clinical validation or market expansion.
