Police detain CPM Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas during a demonstration demanding the resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during a protest in New Delhi on Sunday

Thiruvananthapuram: Narendra Modi govt is attempting to drown in blood the uprising against its authoritarian efforts to trample the electoral process and constitutional institutions, said opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday. In a statement on social media, he said, “What unfolded today in the nation’s capital against peacefully assembled protesters was nothing short of brutal state repression.”“To crush the protest, nearly 50,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed on the streets. They unleashed attacks that would shock human conscience. CPM Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas MP was assaulted and pinned down by police inside a vehicle, leaving him struggling to breathe, before being thrown onto the street. By showing no regard even for an MP, Delhi Police has degenerated into nothing more than a criminal gang.”Student and youth leaders were subjected to extraordinary brutality, he said and added that SFI All India President Adarsh M. Saji was slapped in the face and was seriously injured.“DYFI Central Committee member Jake C Thomas was dragged through the middle of the road and stripped. Police also allegedly grabbed SFI women leaders Simran and Sharanya by the throat, tore their clothes, and stomped on detained students inside vehicles. Several prominent protest leaders, including Dhruv Rathee and Abhijit Dipke, were also victims of police violence.”Thousands were mercilessly beaten. In scenes reminiscent of Hitler’s Nazi Germany, stadiums are reportedly being turned into temporary detention camps to hold those arrested. Leaders are being loaded into buses covered with iron grills and taken toward the borders as if they were being exiled, he added.“The Sangh Parivar may believe it can silence dissent and suppress those who question it through police force, but that is nothing more than an arrogant fantasy. The left movements of this country will not kneel before such state terror unleashed in the intoxication of power. The BJP govt will have to answer to the people for every drop of blood spilled on the streets of Delhi. All who believe in democracy across the country must unite and raise their voices against this savage crackdown. Salutations to everyone standing fearlessly at the forefront of this struggle.”
