Chandigarh: In a major move to improve and make garbage collection more effective, and its subsequent transportation to the dumping site and processing plants, Chandigarh municipal corporation, is all set to launch a new system by hiring an outsourced company, agency or firm. Planned as a pilot project, the civic body has selected 13 villages and the entire commercial area of Manimajra, from where the selected private agency will collect garbage door-to-door daily and transport it to the dumping site and plants for processing.“The tender document for this new exercise is prepared with all the terms and conditions, working criteria, and related administrative and monitoring aspects, and the same went for legal vetting. Soon after the legal vetting, the tender will be floated to get an eligible bidder for this project in the city. Since the senior officers and municipal councillors were part of the tender preparation exercise, all aspects of effective garbage collection are covered in this exercise. Since this system of garbage collection and transportation is going on successfully in many cities of the country, the MC also wants to adopt the same,” sources in the TOI revealed.Significantly, the sanitation department of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh did a complete ground survey of 13 villages and the entire commercial area before starting the exercise on the ground. The door-to-door survey aimed to get an exact picture of garbage collection in the areas and its quantity, so that the authority can have an exact idea of the garbage generated from these locations.“During the ground survey, it was found that at least 40 metric tons of garbage is generated from these 13 villages and the commercial area of Manimajra. The quantity may vary slightly, but largely this should be the daily quantity. Moreover, after collection, the entire generated waste by the selected agency will pass through the weighing machine at the site and, based on the quantity, the private agency will get payment from the MC,” an official told TOI.Since monitoring will be a major component in this entire exercise of garbage collection through the private agency, all the vehicles of the private agency will be GPS-enabled and connected with the MC’s portal for constant monitoring during the working period, especially to monitor their location constantly. Moreover, the sanitation inspectors of the MC will also conduct surprise checks from time to time to assess the functioning of the private agency.
