Chennai: Madras high court has directed the Tamil Nadu govt to respond to a petition seeking installation of warning advertisements in Tasmac liquor outlets highlighting the harmful effects of alcohol consumption.According to petitioner K Gauri Krishnan, who runs a hospital in Cuddalore, he conducted a liver health camp in Panruti and found that 59% of the participants were suffering from liver-related ailments due to alcohol consumption.Admitting the plea on Friday, the first bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan directed the principal secretary of the state health department to respond to a petition seeking the installation of warning advertisements in Tasmac liquor outlets highlighting the harmful effects of alcohol.The petitioner submitted that many people continue to consume alcohol without adequate awareness of its harmful effects, resulting in serious liver damage. He further contended that Tasmac liquor outlets in the Panruti area do not display warning boards about the health risks associated with alcohol consumption, which is contrary to the Tamil Nadu Liquor Retail Vending Rules.Therefore, he wanted the court to direct the authorities to install warning advertisements in Tasmac liquor shops informing the public about the health hazards of alcohol consumption.
