Mohali: In the wake of recent fatal fire incidents in different parts of the country, Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh has directed the municipal commissioner to conduct fire safety audits of paying guest (PG) accommodations, restaurants, gyms and other public establishments across the city to ensure compliance with safety norms and prevent any similar tragedy. The decision was announced during the first meeting of the newly elected House. Stressing the need for proactive measures, the MLA said the city administration cannot afford to ignore fire safety concerns, particularly in commercial establishments and residential accommodations where large numbers of people gather or reside.Referring to two recent major fire incidents in the country that claimed several lives, Kulwant Singh said authorities must learn from such tragedies and strengthen safety mechanisms before an emergency occurs.“Keeping in mind the devastating fires that recently occurred in the country, resulting in the loss of many lives, we must ensure that no such incident takes place in Mohali. Fire audits should be conducted thoroughly and all establishments must comply with prescribed safety standards,” he said. The MLA directed officials to conduct detailed inspections and safety audits of PG accommodations operating in villages and urban areas under the civic body’s jurisdiction. The inspections will also cover restaurants, gyms and other public facilities where fire safety risks may exist. As part of the exercise, a comprehensive inspection drive will be launched in villages including Balongi, Shahi Majra, Sohana, Mataur and Kumbra, where a large number of PG accommodations operate. Officials have been instructed to examine all technical and safety-related aspects of these establishments. The inspections will focus on the availability and functionality of fire-fighting equipment, fire hydrants, emergency exits, building construction norms, parking arrangements, electrical safety measures and the width of access roads and lanes required for emergency vehicles. Authorities will also verify whether fire exits remain accessible and unobstructed.Officials said the objective is to identify safety deficiencies and ensure that operators rectify violations before they pose a threat to public safety. Action will be initiated against establishments found operating in violation of prescribed norms.During the discussions, concerns were raised over the rapid growth of PG accommodations in several villages and the need for stricter monitoring of safety standards. Members of the House emphasised that many such facilities accommodate a large number of students and working professionals, making regular inspections essential.MC officials have been directed to prepare a detailed inspection schedule and submit compliance reports. The administration is expected to coordinate with the fire department and other concerned agencies to carry out the audits effectively.
