Chandigarh: PGIMER is set to adopt advanced 3D imaging and reconstruction technology pioneered in Japan, a move expected to enhance precision in complex surgeries and minimally invasive procedures.The technology was showcased during the 6th Prof BL Talwar Oration at the institute Friday, where experts highlighted its potential to transform surgical planning and execution, particularly in liver surgeries. A visiting Japanese surgical expert demonstrated the technology and its clinical applications.Experts said the technology creates detailed three-dimensional maps of internal organs, helping surgeons plan procedures more accurately. Addressing concerns about artificial intelligence in healthcare, they clarified that such systems are designed to assist surgeons rather than replace them.“Surgeons continue to perform the operations. Robotic systems combined with 3D imaging provide up to 10-times magnification and a highly stable visual field, offering significant advantages over conventional laparoscopic techniques,” said Prof Rakesh Gupta, the main organiser of the conference.According to experts, one of the key benefits of 3D reconstruction is its ability to aid treatment of difficult cases, including deeply located liver tumours. The technology enables surgeons to identify precise anatomical planes and critical structures before surgery, helping preserve healthy liver tissue, minimise blood loss and improve recovery outcomes.The 3D models accurately depict liver segments and their relationship with major blood vessels, allowing surgeons to carry out tumour excision with greater precision.Experts also highlighted the role of the technology in living donor liver transplantation. Robotic procedures, supported by detailed 3D imaging, allow donor surgeries to be performed through small keyhole incisions instead of large open cuts, reducing scarring and recovery time.While several major transplant centres in Delhi and southern India have already adopted robotic liver surgery programmes, PGI officials said the ongoing collaboration with Japanese experts marks an important step towards establishing regular 3D-guided surgical practices at the institute.The technology is expected to strengthen surgical planning and improve outcomes in complex hepatobiliary and transplant procedures, experts said.
