Guwahati: The North-East Petroleum Mazdoor union (NEPMZ) on Friday suspended the transportation of petrol, diesel and LPG from Assam to Meghalaya, citing concerns over safety of Assam-registered vehicles operating in the neighbouring state. The decision followed the suspension of services to Shillong by Assam-based taxi drivers after alleged attacks on Assam-registered vehicles. The union said the stoppage will continue until the Meghalaya govt takes effective measures to ensure safety of Assam-registered vehicles, including tourist vehicles.NEPMZ general secretary Ramen Deka said the union had also suspended loading and unloading operations in Meghalaya amid reports of unrest in several parts of the state.“The tense situation created in recent days by the student organisation has compelled the petroleum mazdoor Union to go on strike. We are not opposed to the students’ movement. However, we do not support harassment, assaults or acts of destruction carried out in the name of protest,” Deka said.“Since petroleum products are highly flammable, this decision has been taken to ensure the safety of both, vehicles and goods,” he added.Deka urged the Meghalaya authorities to restore normalcy and take stringent action against those responsible for violence and harassment.“Unless the situation improves, our members are not willing to transport any kind of petroleum products to Meghalaya. It is not possible to supply essential goods under constant fear and intimidation,” he said.He alleged that drivers transporting oil and gas in Meghalaya had faced harassment and abuse on several occasions, claiming that police had not always taken appropriate action despite being informed. The union said the suspension will remain in force until normalcy was restored and adequate security assured for Assam-registered vehicles.
