Kolkata: An on-duty fireman was allegedly assaulted by three drunk men early on Saturday after he objected to a car being parked in front of the fire station on Mirza Ghalib Street near New Market. Police arrested all three youths in this connection. The accused, identified as Pawan Sharma, Krishna Sarkar and Adarsh Sharma, were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Kolkata on Sunday. The court remanded them to judicial custody till March 2. While the defence sought bail, the public prosecutor opposed the plea, arguing that the trio assaulted a govt employee while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application.According to cops, the incident occurred around 1.30 am in front of the fire department headquarters on Mirza Ghalib Street. Investigators said the 3 accused arrived in a car and attempted to park it directly in front of the fire station gate, a critical access point meant to remain clear at all times to ensure swift movement of fire tenders during emergencies. An on-duty fire department staffer objected to the parking, warning the youths that blocking the entrance could severely hamper emergency response. What began as a verbal exchange soon escalated into a heated argument. Police said the accused allegedly assaulted the fireman and tore his uniform during the scuffle, triggering panic among other personnel stationed inside the premises. The fire department personnel immediately alerted Park Street Police Station. Officers rushed to the spot, brought the situation under control, and detained the trio.
