Karnataka schools embrace digital transformation as holistic report cards promise instant academic tracking, transparent assessments and stronger parental participation
In a major step towards modernising the education system, the Education Department plans to introduce digital “holistic report cards” for students from LKG to Pre-University (PU) level beginning this academic year. After successfully making SSLC and II PUC marksheets available through DigiLocker, the department is now expanding its digital push to cover a child’s entire schooling journey.
An official said, “Under the new system, parents will no longer have to rely solely on physical marksheets to track academic performance. Instead, detailed progress reports will be sent directly to their registered mobile numbers and email addresses, ensuring instant and easy access to their child’s academic updates.”
The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and NCERT’s Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH) framework, which emphasises continuous and comprehensive evaluation of students. The holistic report card will go beyond exam scores to include teacher feedback and insights into a child’s overall development, offering a more complete picture of learning outcomes.
This digital system aims to help parents closely monitor their child’s academic growth and identify areas needing attention through their smartphones.
Officials said the use of advanced technology would ensure every aspect of a student’s progress is communicated efficiently and transparently. “While the shift to digital reporting marks a significant change, the department has clarified that physical marksheets and progress reports will continue to be issued alongside the digital versions.
However, the new system is expected to reduce dependence on paper records and streamline data storage, making it easier for both schools and parents to maintain and access academic information,” an official said.
By providing real-time updates and a comprehensive overview of performance, the initiative is expected to enhance parental involvement in education and support better learning outcomes for students. “The rollout will cover government and aided schools across the state, ensuring that parents of students from LKG to PU level can access detailed academic information at their fingertips. With this move, Karnataka is taking a significant step towards a paperless, technology-driven education system that prioritises transparency, accessibility and holistic development,” the official added.
