Kolkata: Pakistani and UAE banknotes, Rs 12.8 lakh in cash, approximately 780 grams of gold and over 150 land deeds were recovered from the Bolpur residence of Sehgal Hussain — former bodyguard of Trinamool’s Birbhum district chief Anubrata Mondal — hours after his arrest in connection with a stone quarrying and document forgery scam.Hussain was taken into custody by an SIT around midnight on Saturday following a 22-hour interrogation and 16-hour search of his luxury apartment near the Bolpur bypass. He was produced before the Suri court on Sunday and remanded to seven days of police custody.Special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee submitted that one land deed recovered was directly linked to prime accused Tulu Mondal. “Being a constable, he cannot explain how he amassed such wealth,” Chatterjee told the court. Hussain claimed innocence, alleging the foreign currency had come into his possession during routine exchanges.Hussain served as Anubrata Mondal’s personal security officer from 2011 and had previously been arrested by both the CBI and the ED in the cattle smuggling case, spending over two years in Tihar Jail.The investigation centres on forged demand-cum-collection Receipts used to evade stone royalties. Tulu Mondal, the prime accused, is suspected to have fled the country but has approached the Calcutta High Court for anticipatory bail from an undisclosed location.
