PRAYAGRAJ: Five people were crushed to death under two trains in Prayagraj on Wednesday evening.A man was run over by the Kalka Express near the Pachdevra halt overbridge in the Karchana area, prompting the train to stop. Several passengers got down from the train to find out why it had halted.“Around 6:15 pm, the Kalka Express guard and loco pilot spotted a body on the track and stopped the train. Around 35 minutes later, the Purushottam Express arrived on another track and ran over four passengers of the Kalka Express,” North Central Railway Chief PRO Shashikant Tripathi said.Chief Public Relations Officer (NCR) Shashikant Tripathi, while explaining the sequence of events on Thursday, said that at approximately 18:15 hours, the guard and loco pilot of train number 12312 (Kalka Express), travelling in the down direction, spotted a body lying on the tracks.Following protocol, the train was immediately brought to an emergency halt and the matter was reported to the control room.“While the Kalka Express was stationary, several passengers disembarked from the general coaches and stepped onto the adjacent tracks to see what had happened. At approximately 18:47 hours, train number 12801 (Purushottam Express), travelling in the opposite (up) direction, passed the site. The four passengers who had deboarded from the stationary Kalka Express were struck by the Purushottam Express and died on the spot,” he said.
