Kanpur: Despite overnight and morning showers that drenched the city with over 35 mm of rain, Kanpur recorded a 2°C rise in daytime temperature on Friday, underscoring the erratic nature of this year’s monsoon. While cool south-westerly winds and dense cloud cover kept the weather largely pleasant, high humidity caused brief discomfort in the afternoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast another spell of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next 24 hours, with Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat likely to bear the brunt of the monsoon activity. The maximum temperature rose to 32°C, up from 30°C on Thursday, while the minimum settled at a pleasant 24.4°C. The weather observatory at the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology (CSA) recorded 35.2 mm of rainfall during the period.Residents enjoyed pleasant weather through the morning, with intermittent showers and the absence of sultry conditions. However, humidity levels rose during the afternoon before moderate spells of rain after 4 pm brought relief. The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 98%.South-westerly winds blowing at 13.2 kmph helped moderate temperatures and maintain relatively cool conditions across the city.According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon will remain active across all six districts of the Kanpur division — Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Farrukhabad, Kannauj and Auraiya — over the next 24 hours. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail, leaving little possibility of bright sunshine. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across most parts of the division due to moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places.Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat are expected to witness the most intense weather activity over the next 24 hours. Dense cloud cover is likely to persist, while heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds of 30-40 kmph may occur during the evening or night. The weather department has ruled out the possibility of clear skies or bright sunshine across the Kanpur division during the forecast period. Persistent cloud cover and rainfall are expected to keep the sun hidden for most of the day, with only brief appearances during breaks in the clouds. High atmospheric moisture during rain-free intervals may also lead to elevated humidity levels.SN Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, said enhanced moisture inflow is likely to keep the Kanpur division under cloudy skies with strong winds from July 10 to July 12. He added that isolated areas may receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning, while overall weather conditions are expected to remain pleasant.
