Hyderabad: As part of an ongoing clean-up exercise on campus, Osmania University has removed around 300 kg of plastic waste from the lakebed of Landscape Garden.The clean-up drive, now in its third phase, was led by the university’s Gardens, Green Belt and Sanitation (GGBS) department as part of the state govt’s ‘Prajapalana-Pragathi Pranalika’ programme. Over 70 staff members took part in the clean-up, working under technical supervision to ensure the wetland ecosystem remained undisturbed.According to officials, the waste extracted from the lakebed included single-use plastic covers, PET bottles, multilayered packaging, and other synthetic debris that had accumulated over time. The collected material has been moved to a designated site and will be handed over to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for further processing, including recycling and disposal.The clean-up covered the entire lakebed and nearly 80% of the surrounding area. The remaining portions are expected to be cleared in the next phase. GGBS director C Srinivasulu said that additional drives would be organised to maintain the water body and prevent further waste accumulation.The vice-chancellor, Kumar Molugaram, appealed to visitors and public to avoid littering on campus and to use the designated bins.
