Surat: Even as Rath Yatra celebrations were underway, a grieving family in Surat gave the gift of life to three patients through organ donation.The liver and two kidneys of 43-year-old Virsing Maida were harvested at New Civil Hospital (NCH) on Thursday after doctors declared him brain-dead.A native of Kotda in Rajasthan who was living in Kamrej, Surat, Maida suffered a severe electric shock on July 12 after accidentally falling onto an electrical power distribution panel while working as a mason. He was carrying out work above the panel when he lost his balance, came into contact with the live equipment and collapsed.He was initially taken to a nearby private hospital before being shifted to NCH on July 13 for advanced treatment. Owing to the severity of his injuries, he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). On July 15, a medical board comprising resident medical officer Dr Ketan Nayak, plastic surgeon Dr Nilesh Kachhadiya, neurologist Dr Jay Patel and neurosurgeon Dr Keyur Prajapati declared him brain-dead.Following the declaration, Dr Kachhadiya and organ donation counsellor Nirmala Kathude counselled Maida’s wife and other family members about the importance of organ donation. Amid grief, the family agreed to donate his organs.The liver and both kidneys were then transported to the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad, for transplantation.
