GURGAON: A four-year-old girl died after falling into an uncovered sewer near Gandhi Colony in Basantgarh village along Aligarh Road on Monday night.The child, identified as Deepanshi, was an LKG student.Deepanshi went missing from near her home around 8pm on Monday. When she did not return, her family members began searching the neighbourhood and continued looking for her through the night. During the search, the family suspected that she may have fallen into one of the open sewer chambers in the area.The suspicion turned out to be true. Deepanshi was found inside an uncovered sewer. She had suffered a serious head injury in the fall.Family members rushed her to the district civil hospital, where doctors declared her dead.Police reached the spot after being informed and began an investigation. “The child’s body was taken to the district civil hospital, where the necessary proceedings were initiated,” an officer said.The incident has sparked anger among residents, who blamed the authorities and the contractor responsible for the sewer work for leaving the chamber uncovered. Residents alleged that several sewer chambers along the route have remained without covers despite complaints to the authorities.They said the uncovered chambers pose a serious risk, particularly to children and pedestrians using the road. Residents alleged that the civic authorities and the contractor failed to take basic safety measures despite being aware of the problem.Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, inquest proceedings have been initiated under Section 194 of the BNSS.
