Gurgaon: A parking attendant at a mall allegedly attacked a retired Air Force group captain and Kargil War veteran with an iron rod, leaving him with head injuries and a fractured left elbow.Group Captain Amit Kumar Gupta (retired), who was part of the IAF’s ‘Operation Sagar’ team during the 1999 war, said the assault followed a spat over parking at Magnum Global Park in Sector 58 on Sept 10.Gupta had gone to Gonzo restaurant for a family dinner. He told police that after reaching the parking area, he was asked to hand over his car keys to the valet team. He declined, sent his family ahead and decided to park the vehicle himself.Unable to find a spot initially, Gupta said he eventually entered the basement. As he was about to park his car, one of the staffers allegedly struck the vehicle. When Gupta got out and confronted him, the attendant allegedly picked up an iron rod and attacked him as well. He threatened to kill him too.Gupta ran for safety and alerted his family, who rushed to his aid. He also alleged that police arrived late after his family made frantic calls for help. He was eventually taken to Medanta hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.“I am still in acute pain because of the injuries,” Gupta told TOI.Police said they learnt about the assault on Sept 11. Gupta initially told police in a letter that he would submit a complaint later and formally approached them this Sunday.“Police contacted Gupta, who initially informed them through a letter that he would submit his complaint later. He submitted a written complaint on Sept 13, following which an FIR was registered at Sector 65 police station under relevant sections of BNS,” police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said.Parking attendant Deepak Mavi (24), a resident of Kot village in Faridabad, was arrested on Monday. According to police, Mavi admitted during questioning that he picked up an iron pipe lying nearby in anger and struck Gupta on his arm.Mavi is being questioned further to establish the sequence of events. The case, based on Gupta’s complaint, was registered under BNS sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 126 (wrongful restraint), 351(3) (serious and aggravated criminal intimidation) and 117(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt).
