GURGAON: A woman biker who was allegedly hit by a speeding car on Gurgaon’s Golf Course Road has alleged that she was deliberately targeted because she is a woman, saying the driver tried to stop her before steering the car into her motorcycle.The woman, who identifies herself as Sia on social media, questioned why the accused driver, Kalyan Bainsla, did not stop after the crash if he was genuinely distressed by the accident. She alleged that the incident could have cost her life and that the driver did not even attempt to check whether she was safe.“I feel ashamed of such people. Women feel unsafe on the roads of Delhi and Gurugram,” she said, according to news agency PTI.Sia had earlier released a video on social media in which she alleged that there was a deliberate attempt to stop her. She said the two videos that have surfaced in connection with the incident constitute sufficient evidence, as the crash was captured on camera.The woman biker was riding her Aprilia RS 457 with a group of bikers on Golf Course Road on Sunday when the incident took place. She alleged that the occupants of the car approached her and started misbehaving.“The car driver chased me. First, I did not notice the vehicle but it passed at a fast pace by my side. The car occupants gestured to me and tried to stop me,” she told reporters, according to PTI.She alleged that the car subsequently hit her motorcycle, causing her to fall and lose consciousness. When another rider tried to stop the driver and told him to stop because it was his fault, Bainsla allegedly responded, “No, no, no, it was not my fault”.Sia also questioned why Bainsla did not stop even for a second after the collision.The latest allegations came after Gurugram Police added a charge of attempt to murder under Section 109 of the BNS following a detailed investigation and analysis of CCTV footage, police said.“We arrested the car driver, Kalyan Baisla, from Rajasthan today. Following a thorough investigation and detailed analysis of CCTV footage, the charge of attempt to murder under Section 109 of the BNS has been added to the case, which carries a provision of up to 10 years of imprisonment,” said Sibash Kabiraj, commissioner of police, Gurugram.Bainsla was arrested from Rajgarh in Rajasthan on Tuesday, two days after the incident, police said.Taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, Gurugram Police had earlier registered a case at Sector-56 police station. According to ACP (Headquarters) Abhilaksh Joshi, the FIR was initially registered under Section 281 (rash driving) and Section 125 (causing hurt) of the BNS.A video captured by another rider following behind has also gone viral. The footage, posted by Instagram user ‘youknowabhishek_’, allegedly shows the car driver first signalling Sia to stop. When she did not stop, the accused allegedly steered the car towards her sports bike and hit it from the side.The Instagram user said he no longer feels that Gurugram is safe for women.Bainsla, a 32-year-old resident of Tikri Gurjar village in Haryana’s Palwal district, comes from a farming family. He is married and has two children, police said.“Our team is on the way to bring the accused to Gurugram soon,” a Gurgaon police spokesperson said.Earlier, Bainsla had denied deliberately hitting Sia and maintained that the collision was an accident. He said he lost control of the car near a U-turn.“About 20 to 22 motorcyclists sped past me. I didn’t realise a young woman was riding one of the bikes; I had simply asked her and the young man accompanying her to slow down. I did not hit them intentionally.“She was turning without checking her mirrors; just then, near a U-turn, I lost control of the car, and the collision occurred. It was my fault; I admit it,” he said.Bainsla, a gym owner who describes himself as an international kabaddi player, said he fled the spot because he feared the group of bikers would beat him and his family. He has since deactivated his Instagram account following the controversy.“I was travelling with my family. I didn’t make any gestures at the young woman; I simply asked her to ride her bike slowly. I admit that a collision occurred. Had I stopped right then, those people would have beaten us up,” he told the media.Bainsla said he was travelling with his sister and two cousins.Sia, a Delhi resident, has completed a course in fashion designing and contested the 2022 municipal elections from Kalkaji. Her father Roshan Chauhan is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party.(With agency inputs)
