Lucknow: Nearly one in seven stroke patients in India is below the age of 45, with hypertension, diabetes, obesity and sedentary lifestyles emerging as key risk factors among younger adults, experts said at a neuro conclave on Sunday.
Citing data from the ICMR National Stroke Registry Programme and a study published in the International Journal of Stroke, experts said 13.8% of stroke cases in the country occur among people below 45 years of age.
They said hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use and obesity were driving stroke risk among younger adults.
Nearly one in four adults in the state has hypertension, making it a major risk factor for stroke. Experts added that nearly 80% of strokes can be prevented through risk-factor control, screening and timely treatment.
Dr Rakesh Kapoor, medical director, urosurgery, Medanta Hospital, said neurological disorders were becoming more common across age groups and their burden was expected to rise.
“Early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care and timely intervention remain the most effective tools in improving outcomes,” Kapoor said.
