Nagpur: The Ram Nagar-Shankar Nagar stretch experienced a wave of patriotic feelings as citizens from different walks of life carried a 700-metre-long Tricolour on Sunday to mark Kranti Din, observed on Aug 9 to commemorate the launch of Quit India Movement in 1942.The rally, organised by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) under Centre’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, saw participants carrying national flag amid chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’. The procession began from Bajiprabhu Deshpande statue at Ram Nagar Square, passed through Laxmi Bhuvan Square before culminating at Shankar Nagar Square.Mayor Neeta Thakre flagged off the rally in presence of guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, civic officials and other dignitaries.The 700-metre Tricolour remained the centrepiece of the procession, with citizens walking together to keep the massive flag aloft along the entire route. Ex-servicemen, fire brigade personnel and members of NMC’s Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) also joined the march.Students from Valmiki Nagar Hindi Secondary School, Vivekananda Hindi Secondary School and Shivangaon Marathi School added colour to the rally, turning up in different costumes and traditional attire. Cultural performances were held along the way, while a martial arts demonstration by participants from Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh Sahib gurdwara drew attention. Young skaters Athang Rajguru and Umang Nitnavare led parts of the procession.Thakre said the rally was aimed at familiarising the younger generation with the significance of India’s freedom struggle and encouraging a spirit of service towards the nation. She also paid tributes to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for Independence and praised the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative launched by PM Narendra Modi.Ex-mayor Dayashankar Tiwari spoke about the day’s historical significance, recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s call for the movement and Nagpur’s role in carrying forward the freedom struggle.
