Hyderabad: To strengthen emergency medical services, the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) has recently launched the Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST) technology in its emergency department. The eFAST is a rapid bedside ultrasound technique used by doctors to quickly evaluate patients with chest or abdominal injuries. The technology helps physicians detect life-threatening conditions such as internal bleeding or the presence of air in the chest and abdominal cavities within three to five minutes.Hospital officials said the system is an important point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) tool that enables doctors to assess trauma patients immediately and take quick treatment decisions.According to OGH superintendent, Dr Rakesh Sahay, the introduction of eFAST will significantly improve the hospital’s ability to manage emergency and trauma cases. He added that the technology will help doctors prioritise treatment, especially in cases involving multiple injuries.Dr M Raja Rao, principal of Osmania Medical College (OMC), said the new system will help specialists make early diagnoses and begin necessary treatment without delay. Doctors believe the introduction of eFAST will enhance emergency response and improve outcomes for critically injured patients arriving at the hospital.
