Bhubaneswar, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday ordered the setting up of a three-member committee to identify persons or institutions responsible for errors made in the textbooks for students of classes 1 to 8.
The panel will be headed by the development commissioner, and will submit its report within seven days, he said.
Majhi also ordered the authorities concerned to immediately correct printing mistakes in the school students’ textbooks.
The chief minister’s direction came a day after a section of teachers in government-run schools pointed out several errors in new textbooks for students of classes 1-8, including spelling mistakes and incorrect names of eminent personalities.
According to Bramhananda Maharana, president of the Primary Teachers’ Association, over 1,600 errors have been detected in these school textbooks.
The textbooks were prepared in adherence to the National Education Policy 2020, and prescribed for the 2026-27 academic session.
Citing an instance, Maharana said a photograph of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly was used in place of the Odisha Assembly.
Similarly, Odisha’s Niyamgiri Hills, spread over Kalahandi and Rayagada districts, were incorrectly described as being located in Jharkhand.
The opposition BJD accused the state’s BJP government of destroying the Odia education system and demanded immediate withdrawal of all “defective textbooks” and a high-level inquiry.
