Ahmedabad: Gujarat Police have registered more than 18,000 cases during the first 20 days of a statewide drive against vehicles running without numberplates, using tampered plates, or displaying fancy and non-compliant registration numbers.The enforcement campaign, launched on Sept 1, will continue until Oct 14. Traffic police units across cities and districts have been directed to intensify inspections and act against motorists violating numberplate rules.During the period, police detained 4,187 vehicles and collected fines of around Rs 58.6 lakh for various traffic offences.Vadodara City reported the highest number of cases at 1,959, followed by Surat City with 1,786 and Banaskantha with 1,363 cases, police said.Officials said the campaign aims to ensure that vehicle registration numbers remain clearly visible and easily identifiable, a key requirement for effective traffic enforcement and road safety.Police said the crackdown will continue across Gujarat in the coming weeks, with stricter action against repeat offenders and serious violations.
