Ahmedabad: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has sought strict action over alleged financial irregularities and misuse of govt funds at Gujarat University (GU) during the tenure of former vice-chancellor Neerja Gupta.The university had reportedly received around Rs 40 crore from the Centre under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) for educational and infrastructure development. Citing documents and financial records, NSUI claimed that several transactions linked to the grant have raised concerns.Among the allegations, the student body claimed that nearly Rs 9.8 lakh from the grant was transferred as foreign exchange to a bank account in Germany belonging to the former vice-chancellor’s son. It also alleged that Gupta drew an additional monthly remuneration of around Rs 4.2 lakh as a “principal investigator” while serving as vice-chancellor and receiving a regular salary, allegedly without the required syndicate approval.NSUI further alleged that consultant Sameer Shukla, certain agencies and other accounts were involved in suspicious financial transactions, raising concerns that public funds may have been diverted for personal gain.The organisation has demanded that the university lodge an FIR with the cybercrime branch, Economic Offences Wing (EOW) or local police against the former vice-chancellor and others allegedly involved. It has also called for an independent high-level inquiry and recovery of any amount found to have been obtained illegally, along with interest.Warning of statewide agitation, NSUI said it would launch protests on the university campus and across Gujarat if legal action is not initiated.
