Jaipur: Three NSUI functionaries climbed atop a water tank near Gandhi Nagar railway station Thursday, demanding resignation of Union home minister Amit Shah over alleged police action against students in Delhi and restoration of student union elections in universities of Rajasthan.The protesters — NSUI Rajasthan in-charge Vijaypal Kudi, Koshen Khan and member Viyona Jat — climbed the tank near the Tonk Phatak overbridge around 7.30am. Carrying only drinking water and no food, they declared they would remain atop the structure until their demands were met.In a video statement, the trio alleged police brutality against students during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20 and accused the Rajasthan govt of delaying student union elections. Elections to student unions in the state were last held in 2022.Speaking to TOI, Kudi said the decision to climb the water tank came after repeated representations to the govt failed to produce results. “We know protesting from a water tank is not the right way, but the govt is also not doing the right thing. Student union elections should be held every year, but they have been ignored. Students protesting peacefully in Delhi were beaten, which was also wrong. We had no option left after memorandums and discussions failed,” he said.District administration officials and police remained at the site throughout the day, negotiating with the protesters to come down safely. Authorities installed a safety net beneath the water tank and stationed an ambulance nearby as a precaution.The protesters said they would continue their agitation without food, describing it as a hunger strike until the govt announced a decision on holding student union elections.
