Itanagar: Insurgent outfits National Socialist Council of Nagaland (K-Yung Aung) and Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) have jointly claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s ambush on an Assam Rifles patrol team in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, in which a jawan was killed and four others were injured.The ambush took place near the India-Myanmar border around 6.30am, a statement issued by NSCN (K-YA)’s ‘ministry of information and publicity’ stated.According to the statement, a combined tactical team of NSCN/GPRN and RPF executed the operation against personnel of 21 Assam Rifles near Nampong. The outfits claimed to have killed one soldier, injured several others and seized an AK assault rifle from the site.Security officials said the patrol team came under heavy fire near Nampong Nallah in Nampong circle, where border fencing work is under way.The deceased soldier was identified as havildar Jankhokai Kuki (42). The four injured personnel were evacuated to a medical facility for treatment.Security forces launched a counter-insurgency operation and intensified searches in the border area following the attack. Changlang superintendent of police Kirli Padu said local police had been directed to collect further details.Paying tribute to the fallen jawan, Assam Rifles posted on X: “Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, director general Assam Rifles & All Ranks of Assam Rifles pay solemn tribute to Hav Jangkhokai Kuki who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty at Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh on 29 Sep 2026 and offer deep condolences to the family of our brave soldier.”The Changlang stretch of India-Myanmar border remains a volatile corridor due to cross-border movement by armed outfits. Officials said apart from NSCN (K-YA), cadres of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) are active in the area.
