Dwaipayan.GhoshKolkata: Former minister Aroop Biswas has been named in a fresh FIR over an alleged attempt on a lawyer’s life inside the Alipore court complex. The FIR was registered at Alipore Police Station under BNS sections 109 (attempt to murder) and 153 (wanton provocation with intent to cause a riot) following a violent altercation on the court premises. The complaint was filed by Nirmalendu Kumar Ghosh, a practising advocate at the Alipore court. Ghosh alleged that Biswas, along with his political supporters and local miscreants, physically assaulted him and attempted to kill him during a court hearing on June 18.According to the complaint, tensions escalated on the morning of June 18 when the former minister’s brother, Swarup Biswas, who is facing charges of fraud, extortion and sexual harassment in a separate case, was produced before the court.Ghosh, who is representing the complainant in the case against Swarup, alleged that political supporters had been heckling and provoking the complainant’s lawyers since early that morning. The situation allegedly turned critical around 4.30 pm. Ghosh claimed that when he entered a court office room, he found the former minister seated inside while his supporters gathered outside, claiming that police and judiciary “were in their pocket”.He further alleged that Biswas used his mobile phone from inside the room to incite his followers. Moments later, an unidentified person allegedly attacked Ghosh with a shard of broken glass. While trying to shield himself, Ghosh suffered a deep injury to his right thumb and blunt-force injuries to his back and shoulder. Colleagues rescued him and took him to SSKM Hospital for treatment.“I was attacked because I was pursuing the case against Swarup Biswas,” Ghosh said, calling the incident a pre-planned attempt at intimidation and murder. The former minister is already under investigation by Bidhannagar South Police over alleged financial irregularities and security lapses linked to last year’s Lionel Messi event.
