Residents often get dirty, brown water that has high metal content

Noida: Residents of Sector P-3 in Greater Noida have urged Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) to upgrade the area’s water pipeline, which, they said, is corroded, leaks frequently and also supplies contaminated water to households.GNIDA held a public meeting earlier this week and asked residents to directly inform officials of their grievances regarding the water infrastructure. In the meeting, the president of the sector’s residents’ welfare association Amit Bhati said the issues inconvenience around 10,000 people who live there. He added that the infrastructure has not been revamped in 30 years. “Since the land in the sector was allotted in 1996, the pipeline has not been revamped. There is an urgent need to upgrade it, especially since the population of the sector has risen since then. Now, the pipeline is rusted and the residents are receiving water that is dirty and mixed with metals. In addition, the water pressure is very low and supply is often unpredictable,” he said.Residents also asked that the quality of the water supply be improved. “Every day, we get dirty, yellowish water. Forget about drinking or cooking, people cannot even bathe in the water that is supplied here,” said Aditya Bhati, another resident of the sector. The water has tested high in total dissolved solids (TDS), which indicates that it is highly polluted. The third demand they made is to ensure timely supply three times a day — a schedule similar to how other sectors in the area get their water supply.

Residents said the installation of a separate pump close to the sector could also solve the water pressure issues they were facing.GNIDA senior manager (water) Chetram, who headed the meeting, assured them that a permanent solution would be implemented this month. He also indicated additional pumps would be installed within the next five days and separate water lines for some societies would also be built to alleviate the load on the existing infrastructure.
