Mangaluru: A preliminary inquiry by the Dakshina Kannada district police into the alleged attempt to abduct a minor found that the complaint was false, with a medical examination confirming that the injuries were self-inflicted.Belthangady police launched an investigation on Monday after a 16-year-old student alleged that three unidentified men attempted to abduct her while she was on her way to school. She claimed that the men, who had their faces covered, arrived in a minivan and intercepted her two-wheeler about 300m from her house. According to her initial statement, the accused attacked her with a knife when she resisted, causing four stab injuries to her left hand. Following the incident, the girl and her parents approached police station and filed a complaint.

However, police on Tuesday said that scrutiny of CCTV footage from the area did not reveal any vehicle matching the description given in the complaint. “Medical examination initially confirmed that the injuries were self-inflicted. The girl’s statement was recorded again, during which she admitted to giving a false statement regarding the incident,” police said. As the girl is a minor, police said the matter is being handled sensitively in her best interest. She will be provided counselling through the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), and further legal action will be decided accordingly. Police also said that appropriate action would be initiated as the minor was riding a two-wheeler. Meanwhile, sources said that the student was keen on changing her college.
