Chatra: A pregnant woman, who was in labour, gave birth while she was being carried to an ambulance waiting around 2.5 km away from her house at Hindiyakhurd village in Pratappur block of Chatra district on Sunday. The vehicle couldn’t reach her house due to the lack of a bridge over the rain-fed river.A villager said, “Sabita Devi was in labour since Saturday night. Family members called 108 Mamta Vahan (ambulance). The health department team reached the village with an ambulance, but the ambulance could not reach Sabita’s house due to the river. The family was forced to carry her through the jungle to the ambulance. But she gave birth before she could reach the vehicle.”Sukar said that his wife and the new-born son are in good health. Sanjeev Kumar, in-charge of the Pratappur community health centre, said, “An ambulance arrived on time, but could not reach the village due to the river.” Authorities said that the village would be connected with a proper bridge soon. Acting upon directives of Chatra DC Kirtishiree G, a team from the rural development’s special division surveyed the river to draw plans for the construction. Junior engineer Navodit Kumar, who was part of the team, said, “Estimated cost and other details will be finalised after the survey.”
