Mangaluru: The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) handled over 50 million tonnes (MMT) of cargo in its golden jubilee financial year, surpassing the 48.5 MMT target set by the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways, said S Shanthi, deputy chairperson of NMPA.She was presiding over a seminar on ‘Maritime adversities and role of stakeholders’ and the Indian Port Act 2025 Wednesday.Outlining future plans, Shanthi said the development of Berth No 9 for liquid bulk cargo will enhance both draft and cargo-handling capacity to 10.5 million tonnes. Berth No 13 will be allotted to captive users to ease congestion, while Berth No 17, which was delayed, will soon be opened for tender.She said eight major maritime development projects have recently been launched. Among these, a dedicated cruise gate for international tourists and a 150-bedded hospital have been completed.On sustainability, Shanthi said the port is implementing the Harit Sagar green port guidelines to reduce carbon footprints and has commissioned a 4 MW solar power plant, moving towards becoming a self-sustained port. Digital platforms such as Sagar Samriddhi, Sagar Manthan and the Sagar Setu app are improving operational efficiency.“These initiatives reflect our commitment to building a future-ready maritime ecosystem that supports trade, tourism and economic resilience,” she said, adding that youth have a key role in adopting green technologies and promoting sustainable and responsible development.Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Darshan HV stressed the need to strengthen disaster preparedness and response systems amid rising maritime challenges.Capt LK Panda, former nautical adviser to the govt of India, and Capt Anand W Karkare, former deputy conservator of Mumbai Port Authority, shared insights on maritime adversities, regulatory developments and stakeholder responsibilities.
