Mumbai: SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) has appointed academic leader and management scholar Prof. Sougata Ray as its Vice Chancellor with effect from July 16, 2026.
Prof. Ray brings more than three decades of experience in higher education, strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship and corporate governance. Before joining NMIMS, he served as the Thomas Schmidheiny Chaired Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship Practice and Executive Director of the Thomas Schmidheiny Centre for Family Enterprise at the Indian School of Business (ISB).
Earlier, he held several academic and leadership positions at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta), including Professor of Strategic Management, Dean and Member of the Board of Governors. He also led the Innovation Lab at Infosys Technologies as General Manager and has advised businesses and public institutions on strategy, governance and digital transformation.
An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and IIEST Shibpur, Prof. Ray’s academic work spans strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, digital transformation and family enterprise. He has authored nearly 200 research papers, articles, books and case studies and has contributed to institution-building initiatives at IIM Indore, IIM Calcutta and ISB.
Commenting on the appointment, NMIMS Chancellor Amrish R. Patel said Prof. Ray’s academic credentials and leadership experience would help steer the university through its next phase of growth.
Prof. Ray said he looked forward to building on NMIMS’ strengths by promoting innovation, interdisciplinary learning and industry collaboration while preparing students for an increasingly AI-driven world.
