Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) effected a sudden reshuffle in its transport department, with an order issued late on Thursday night relieving transport manager Meghna Vasanakar of her additional charge. In a move that has sparked discussions within the civic body, the responsibility has been assigned to in charge additional commissioner Milind Meshram instead of a deputy commissioner-rank officer.Sources said the decision would further increase Meshram’s workload, as he already holds charge as additional commissioner (general administration) apart from shouldering responsibilities of the revenue department, property tax department, sky sign department, local body tax (LBT), slum rehabilitation and information technology. It is learnt that Meshram was not in favour of taking over the additional responsibility.NMC has seven sanctioned posts of deputy commissioners, including four deputation posts and three meant for civic body officers. At present, however, five officers are serving on deputation as deputy commissioners. Despite the availability of deputy commissioners, entrusting the transport department to an additional commissioner has raised several questions.Vasanakar, who also heads the education department, will now retain charge of only that department. The reasons behind her removal from the transport department remain unclear. Complaints regarding the functioning of the department reportedly were mounting over the past several weeks, leading to pressure for a change in leadership. However, civic officials declined to reveal who exerted pressure for the reshuffle.
