New Delhi: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is likely to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member on April 10. Senior NDA leaders are expected to be present during the oath-taking ceremony.

Sources told ET that during his visit to the national capital, Kumar will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and other NDA leaders.

After taking oath as a Rajya Sabha member, Kumar will return to Patna and hold a meeting with JDU leaders on the way forward. On April 13, he is likely to resign as the chief minister. Sources told ET that Kumar will most likely attend Parliament’s three-day special session beginning April 16.

After his resignation as chief minister, NDA leaders from Bihar will discuss government formation.

Kumar, who used to hold Cabinet meetings in Patna every week, has not held a meeting since March. JDU leaders maintained that the party’s representation in the new Cabinet will be decided by Kumar.

Live Events

With BJP expected to lead the Bihar government after Kumar’s resignation, the party is likely to appoint a central observer to elect a new legislative party leader. Deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary is among the frontrunners to succeed Kumar. In such a scenario, JDU may get deputy chief minister’s post. Kumar’s party may also demand the Speaker’s post as per the previous arrangement between the two alliance partners.
