Ranchi: A mob set a pick-up van on fire at Piska More under Pandra police station limits on Sunday morning after learning that it was allegedly carrying cattle for smuggling, police said. Nine persons, including the owner of the vehicle, have been arrested in connection with the incident so far.According to police, information was received around 4:30 am about a van transporting cattle, following which a team was sent to the spot for verification. By the time police reached, a crowd of around 40 people had gathered near the stationed vehicle. Angered over the alleged smuggling, the crowd unloaded the animals and set the van ablaze. Fire service vehicles were called to the spot to douse the flames.Kotwali additional superintendent of police Nikhil Rai said, “Police team tried to disperse the mob but was outnumbered. The crowd was chased away after additional forces arrived at the spot.”Rai said nine persons, including the owner of the vehicle has been arrested in connection with the alleged illegal transportation of cattle. The rescued cattle were kept at the local police station, he said. Police said further investigation is underway.
