Coimbatore: The Singanallur police on Saturday registered a case against nine people who broke open a mortuary door and took out a man’s body to stage a road blockade on Kamarajar Road here on Friday.According to a police officer, S Mahamaheswaran, 29, of Sivaganga, died by suicide on Thursday. “His body was kept at ESI Govt Medical College and Hospital for postmortem. However, his relatives grew suspicious about the death after noticing bloodstains on the body.” On Friday, he said, a group of people arrived at the hospital and forcibly entered through the eastern and western verandas while shouting aggressively. “They pushed aside the cops, doctors and the mortuary assistants, who tried to stop them. They also smashed the glass panes of the doors of doctors’ consultation rooms.” After entering the mortuary, the officer said, the group took Mahamaheswaran’s body and moved it to Kamarajar Road in front of the hospital, where they staged a road roko, demanding justice and a transparent investigation into the cause of death. Following the incident, the hospital’s resident medical officer lodged a police complaint. Based on the hospital CCTV footage, the Singanallur police have registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Tamil Nadu Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act against nine relatives of the deceased. Police are investigating to identify the others involved in the case.
