Chennai: With the death toll in the Tiruvallur shrimp processing factory ammonia leak case crossing 9, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident.The commission, headed by former judge of the Supreme Court Justice V Ramasubramanian, has directed the Tamil Nadu chief secretary and DGP to file a detailed report on the incident in two weeks.“The report should include the status of the health of the workers as well as the disbursement of the relief amount announced by the state govt to be paid to the family of the deceased workers,” the commission said.NHRC took suo motu cognisance of the incident based on media reports. On June 21, two women died, and several others fell sick after inhaling ammonia, which leaked at a private shrimp processing factory in Tiruvallur. At the time of the incident, the employees were taking a rest in a nearby room. About 59 workers have been admitted to various hospitals in Chennai and Tiruvallur soon after the incident.
