Patiala: Special monitor (leprosy) at National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr Pradeepta Kumar Nayak, reviewed welfare measures, healthcare and access to govt schemes for persons affected by leprosy and those facing mental health issues during a visit to Patiala.Nayak visited leprosy colonies in Patiala and Rajpura, interacting with residents to know about their problems, needs and access to govt services. He directed officials to ensure no person was denied services or welfare benefits, prevent social discrimination and support dignified inclusion in mainstream society.At a review meeting with district officials, Nayak assessed services from the health and leprosy, social security, social welfare, mental health, education, employment and livelihood, women and child development, and SC, minorities and OBC welfare departments.He asked departments to coordinate so people affected by leprosy received healthcare, social security and other welfare benefits. He also called for verification of departmental records and field checks where required.Nayak said NHRC was reviewing the situation across states and districts and monitoring compliance with Supreme Court directions.He praised Patiala district for maintaining comprehensive records of pensions and other welfare schemes provided to every person affected by leprosy through social security department.He said Supreme Court had mandated quarterly reporting to NHRC nationwide.
