Around 3.05 hectares of land will be required from various govt agencies and departments for the project

Gurgaon: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has prepared a preliminary land acquisition plan for two proposed flyovers at Rajiv Chowk as part of efforts to ease congestion at one of the city’s busiest intersections.According to the plan, around 3.05 hectares of land will be required from various govt agencies and departments for the project, which is aimed at improving traffic flow between Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and Sohna Highway.The proposal includes construction of two new flyovers. One right-turn flyover is planned for vehicles coming from the Sohna side, allowing direct access to Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway towards Sector 15 without stopping at the Rajiv Chowk traffic signal. The second flyover will facilitate uninterrupted movement from the Sector 32 side towards Sohna Highway.According to the preliminary plan, land has been identified from six agencies, including department of animal husbandry, Air Force, Tau Devi Lal stadium, department of telecommunications (DoT), green belts and other govt-owned plots.The largest share, around 0.89 hectares, has been identified from DoT land, followed by nearly 0.83 hectares from the stadium and about 0.73 hectares from Air Force land. Smaller parcels have been earmarked from green belts, govt plots and land belonging to department of animal husbandry.An NHAI official said discussions with the concerned agencies would be initiated to address land availability issues.“A meeting with GMDA officials will be held soon to resolve matters related to land under its administration. Simultaneously, the issue concerning DoT land will be taken up at the ministerial level,” the official said.The project is part of a broader plan to redesign Rajiv Chowk and improve traffic flow and road safety. Last year, NHAI was tasked with conducting a feasibility study to assess traffic patterns and recommend long-term decongestion measures.Rajiv Chowk is a key transport node linking the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway with Sohna Highway, which further connects to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Although the intersection already has a flyover and underpass built at a cost of around Rs 250 crore, traffic volumes increased significantly after the opening of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in 2023.Currently, motorists travelling from Sohna towards Delhi must exit onto the surface road, wait at a traffic signal and re-enter the expressway. Traffic moving from Delhi towards Sohna also faces delays due to congestion caused by local traffic, buses and auto-rickshaws around the junction.The absence of a fully integrated interchange has resulted in long-distance and local traffic converging at the same point, creating conflict zones and worsening delays during peak hours.NHAI had prepared a concept plan in 2024 to address congestion at Rajiv Chowk, but it did not move forward. Earlier traffic studies also recommended structural interventions, though space constraints remained a challenge. The proposed RRTS station near Rajiv Chowk is expected to add further complexity to future planning.
