Kolkata: The restaurant atop New Town Gate, which has been shut after a fire broke out there on Dashami evening, will reopen only after the fire department conducts a final inspection and gives the go-ahead, possibly before Diwali. Hidco, which manages New Town Gate and operates the hanging restaurant, will repair the affected portion.A govt officials said a safety audit will be conducted for the evaluation of the fire safety protocol on the premises to avert such incidents in future.Fire officers suspect an electrical short circuit was the reason behind the fire. Officials said the portion, where the fire broke out, was covered in fire-preventing cloth, which prevented the flames from spreading.It was on Dashami evening last Wednesday that a fire broke out at the hanging restaurant atop New Town Gate, leading to panic as glowing embers fell about 80 feet down onto the road below. No one was injured and no major damage was reported as the restaurant officials quickly evacuated customers.
