Malhotra, 62, is currently the only Union minister from Delhi in the Modi Cabinet. He succeeds Virendra Sachdeva, who completed his three-year term in March this year.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin appointed Malhotra, who belongs to the Punjabi community, to lead the party’s Delhi unit. He officially assumed his duties at the Delhi BJP office at 2.30 pm.
Malhotra won the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat in 2024. He was then inducted into the Modi government as Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Road Transport and Highways in June 2024.
He is regarded as an expert in organisational matters and the functioning of civic bodies. Before becoming a minister at the Centre, he served as the general secretary of the Delhi BJP.
He began his political career as a district general secretary in 2005 and became district president in 2007. In 2012, he contested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) from the Welcome ward.
In 2015, he was elected as mayor of the erstwhile East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC).
A graduate in science and law, Malhotra is deeply engaged in social work. He has been associated with the non-profit organisation ‘Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti‘ for nearly three decades, which promotes organ and body donation in the Delhi-NCR region.
