Prayagraj: In a major step towards fulfilling the twin objectives of ‘Digital India’ and ‘Green Railways’, North Central Railway (NCR) has completed digitisation campaign in just six months, converting more than 2.05 crore records into digital format and substantially reducing its dependence on paper.According to senior public relations officer (PRO) Amit Malviya, the exercise led to the removal of 2.21 crore pages and 4.6 metric tonnes of obsolete records, freeing up more than 15,730 square feet of office space across the zone. The railway administration has also created a secure digital storage capacity of more than 58 terabytes.Calling the initiative a landmark achievement, GM, NCR said, “This is a historic step towards improving transparency, efficiency and accountability in railway operations. Digitisation has not only streamlined administrative processes but has also strengthened our commitment to environmental sustainability.”Prayagraj division digitised 91.44 lakh records, removed 23.94 lakh pages and created more than 40 terabytes of digital storage space while freeing 3,609 square feet of office space.Jhansi division digitised 44.46 lakh records, cleared nearly 1.87 crore pages and vacated more than 10,600 square feet of space. The Jhansi workshop digitised 28.89 lakh records, while the CMLR workshop converted another six lakh records into digital format. Agra division digitised 33.76 lakh records.The campaign has also significantly reduced paper consumption. Railway records show that the average monthly use of paper declined from 4,191 reams during the 2025-26 financial year to 2,548 reams in the current fiscal year, a reduction of 39%.According to Malviya, the next phase of the project will focus on digitising records stored at smaller railway stations so that additional space can be used for operational and employee welfare activities.
