Surat: Doctors at Surat’s New Civil Hospital (NCH) saved the life of a 10-year-old boy who suffered a rare and potentially fatal injury after falling from the third floor of an under-construction building in the Unn Patia area on Tuesday.The boy fell from the third to the second floor of the construction site. During the fall, an iron rod pierced his body from the back of the shoulder and travelled upwards through the neck before emerging inside his mouth.The injury was considered extremely critical because the rod had passed close to major blood vessels, the airway and other vital structures in the neck and face.The boy was rushed to the NCH Trauma Centre, where emergency doctors immediately stabilised him and arranged urgent investigations before preparing him for surgery. Given the complexity of the injury, a multidisciplinary surgical team was mobilised.The operation was led by plastic surgeon Dr Nilesh Kachhadiya and ENT surgeon Dr Navneet, with support from Dr Prakash Patel, Dr Hardik Astik, Dr Deep Shah, Dr Rithik and Dr Kaushal Navadiya, along with anaesthesia and ENT teams. Medical officer Dr Bharat Chavda, emergency personnel, operation theatre nursing staff and others also assisted in the procedure.Doctors found that the rod had travelled through the neck and reached the retromolar triangle, a region inside the mouth near the back of the jaw.The team carefully removed the rod in a coordinated procedure that lasted about an hour. Remarkably, there was no major bleeding during the extraction. The ENT team subsequently treated the internal injury in the boy’s mouth.Hospital authorities said the child’s survival was possible because of rapid stabilisation, coordinated decision-making and timely surgical intervention.
