NEW DELHI: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted an cross-border heroin trafficking cartel, seizing 5.160 kg of heroin and arresting three persons, including the suspected mastermind of the network.Acting on specific intelligence on Aug 22, NCB officials intercepted a vehicle at Panjtirthi in Jammu. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery and seizure of 5.160 kg of heroin worth around Rs 11 crore from two accused persons, both residents of Baramulla.Based on leads generated during the operation, the agency launched an immediate follow-up investigation to trace another Baramulla resident suspected of masterminding and supplying the trafficking network. The accused was traced to Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh and arrested on August 24, within two days of the seizure.According to the NCB, a preliminary investigation indicates that the seized heroin may be part of an organised cross-border supply chain. The contraband is suspected to have originated in Pakistan and entered India through the Uri border sector. The agency said further investigation would establish the exact source and movement of the drugs.The swift arrest of the alleged mastermind underscores the NCB’s focus on dismantling entire trafficking networks rather than limiting enforcement action to couriers and seizures.Investigators are now probing the cartel’s suspected cross-border suppliers, financial channels, transporters, local associates and intended distribution network. The agency is also working to establish the forward and backward linkages of the operation.The latest action follows two other heroin seizures by NCB Jammu earlier this month. The agency seized 438 grams of heroin on Aug 12 and another 603 grams on Aug13, highlighting what officials described as sustained intelligence-led anti-narcotics operations in the region.The NCB said further investigation and intelligence development are underway to uncover the full extent of the cartel and identify all those involved.The agency has urged citizens to support the fight against drug trafficking and addiction by sharing credible information through the National Narcotics Helpline, MANAS (1933).
