Srinagar, Sep 18: National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Friday said the party would continue to follow the path laid by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, claiming that the Omar Abdullah-led government was working to ensure political, social and administrative representation across Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah made the remarks while interacting with a delegation of NC office-bearers and workers from Samba district, led by senior party leader Rajesh Sagotra. The meeting focused on party affairs, organisational activities and grassroots engagement, while the delegation apprised him of issues faced by people in their respective areas.
Abdullah highlighted the land reforms introduced during Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s tenure, saying they enabled large sections of poor and working-class people in Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir to acquire land ownership rights. He also credited the reforms with contributing to improvements in living standards, education and healthcare.
On Jammu, Abdullah said the region had made significant progress but claimed its development was affected after people voted for the BJP.
He alleged that greater political emphasis had been placed on religious issues instead of public concerns, development and prosperity. He also criticised the opening of government employment opportunities in J&K to candidates from across the country.
Abdullah also criticised the discontinuation of the Darbar Move, saying the practice had been an important administrative and economic link between Jammu and Kashmir. He said the Omar Abdullah-led government restored the practice after assuming office.
The NC president urged party workers to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots, maintain unity and remain in regular contact with the public. He asked them to highlight people’s grievances and work towards their resolution.
