Srinagar, Sep 21: In a scathing crtique of the National Conference-BJP combine, Budgam MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi on Monday alleged that both parties had conspired to disrupt Assembly proceedings, deliberately preventing the legitimate grievances of the people of Jammu and Kashmir from being aired on the floor of the House.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, MLA Mehdi charged that the ruling dispensation had orchestrated the disruption of House proceedings to ensure that critical issues — including the contentious reservation policy, the plight of intern doctors, the demands of NHM employees, and the concerns of daily wagers — were never taken up for discussion.
“The institutional marginalization of Kashmiri Muslims is underway,” Mehdi said, pointing to what he described as a calculated demographic sleight of hand in the reservation framework. “A community that constitutes 60% of the population has been reduced to a mere 14% share in the reservation matrix. This is not an administrative oversight — it is deliberate marginalization.”
The Budgam legislator revealed that an adjournment motion had been moved first thing in the morning, specifically to bring these pressing public issues to the immediate attention of the House. However, he alleged, coordinated disruptions ensured the motion never received its due hearing.
“From the very first day, the National Conference and the BJP made it abundantly clear that the sentiments and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir have no place in this Assembly,” Mehdi stated, adding that the pattern of conduct left little room for doubt about the intent of both parties.
Mehdi drew a sharp contrast between the unrest outside the Assembly and the proceedings within it. Across Jammu and Kashmir, he noted, people are protesting across multiple fronts — agitating over reservation policies, demanding justice for contractual healthcare workers, and seeking regularization of daily wage employees.
“Our people are on the streets. They are protesting. They are raising their voices. And what did this House do today? It was wrecked — deliberately wrecked — so that not a single one of their voices could find representation here,” he said.
