Srinagar, Sept 25: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Friday welcomed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resolution in the Legislative Assembly seeking restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
In a joint statement, the party’s Additional General Secretaries Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan and Ajay Kumar Sadhotra said the resolution would provide members of the House an opportunity to state their position on the demand for restoration of statehood.
The NC leaders said the party had raised the issue with the Union government and in Parliament, besides taking it up through public meetings and protests.
They also criticised the disruption by BJP members after the resolution was moved, saying it reflected the party’s opposition to the demand.
The leaders said the resolution referred to earlier resolutions passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 2000 and 2024, and maintained that the latest resolution was within the constitutional framework.
The NC said restoration of statehood would enable the elected government to exercise the powers associated with a full-fledged state.
