Pune: Bhimrao Prabhakar Kamble (65), the accused in the rape and murder of a three-year-old girl at Nasrapur in Bhor taluka of rural Pune, was on Thursday sent to the Yerawada central jail after the court of additional sessions judge MG Chavan ordered his 14-day remand under judicial custody.Public prosecutor Arundhati Brahme said the investigating officer had stated in his report that the probe was still under way and further police custody of the accused was not required at this stage. She said a chargesheet would be submitted soon. Brahme also informed the court that while several evidentiary leads were still being examined, the accused had been sufficiently interrogated so far in custody.Kamble was arrested late in the night of May 1 based on CCTV footage in which he was seen leading the child to a cowshed, where her body was eventually found during a search. The footage helped in his identification and detention. Investigators have so far recorded statements of more than 30 witnesses, including three boys aged around 10 to 11 years. They saw Kamble with the victim near the cowshed shortly before the incident.The state has appointed Ajay Misar as the special public prosecutor in the case in view of the widespread outrage following the incident. Superintendent of police (Pune Rural) Sandeep Singh Gill had earlier said a chargesheet would be filed within 15 days and that the case would be tried in a fast-track court.
