Nagpur: With narco mafia targeting Nagpur as a base and transit point in central India considering high demand for party drugs like MD, Nagpur police launched an anti-narcotics campaign and seized drugs worth around Rs 7 crore in June, which is an increase of around 123% compared to seizures worth around Rs 3.11 crore till May.Also, seizures in MD cases increased 75% year on year, dealing a blow to drug traffickers who exploit Nagpur’s strategic location connecting Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The special operation completely focused on breaking these supply chains through sustained, intelligence-driven pressure.The surge in police action comes amid growing concerns over synthetic drugs like MD flooding markets, particularly targeting the youngsters at the parties.In June 2026, the city police registered 425 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a sharp rise from 199 cases till May — an increase of 226 or 113.57%. MD cases climbed to 14, up from eight in June 2025. MD seizures soared to 9 kg, a massive 451% jump from 1.6 kg during the corresponding period last year.“Police teams carried out aggressive operations, including backward and forward linkage probes, analysis of financial transactions, monitoring of jail-released offenders and close surveillance of repeat offenders,” said DCP Detection Deepak Aggarwal.This multi-pronged approach went beyond mere seizures to dismantle the entire narcotics ecosystem — from street-level peddlers to key suppliers, the DCP added.“Night nakabandis, intensified vehicle checks and AI-assisted surveillance played a pivotal role in intercepting consignments, while sustained focus on supply-and demand-side factors targeted the root problem,” said Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy.“Nagpur police are determined to keep the pressure on narcotics syndicates. Special drives like this will continue with even greater intensity in the coming months,” said an official.Additionally, operations also were planned against financial networks as well as interstate linkages.
