Mysuru: A Class VIII student of Mercy Residential School for Hearing Impaired has made Mysuru proud by getting selected for the World Deaf Chess Championship to be held in Spain in May. He is the first student from the school in its history of 40 years to represent the county on the global stage.

Yashvant S, who hails from Hassan, is now selected for the World Deaf Chess Championship. He secured second place in the 26th national-level championship organised by the All India Sports Council for the deaf and got selected for the World Deaf Chess Tournament. The championship was held in Nagpur, Maharashtra, in Feb.

According to school headmistress Sr. Mariya, the student joined the residential school in Class I. “While in the lower grade, he showed interest in chess and started learning,” she said.

Yashvant is good in studies and other extracurricular activities. “Our students are excelling in various championships at the state and national levels. However, for the first time, a student has been selected for an international championship,” she said.
